I Love Running! It has been such a great outlet for me since having kids. It’s my precious alone time and my time to reflect and just think about stuff.
I started seriously running 5 years ago when my son was 6 months old. At that time, I joined a running group that was training for the BMO Vancouver 1/2 marathon. It was a great experience and I really enjoyed training with a group of people. After that first running group experience, I turned into a 5 day/week solo 6 am road runner. I have now ran a couple more half marathons, a couple crazy Sunshine Coast Trail Marathon Shuffles (http://sunshinecoast-trail.com/events/) and the Las Vegas Rock n Roll marathon (weeks before I turned 40 years old).
I am days before my next half marathon. This is the first race that I have gone the entire 12 weeks of training with no alcohol and adhering to Paleo 100%. It’s also my first race in which I have incorporated strength training into my weekly routine. I followed the Hal Higdon Training Program but as the long runs got over 15 km I actually dropped a run which meant I was only running 3 days/week. I went to 2 “Train It” classes (works strength, mobility and cardio) and 1 TKO class (cardio class that incorporates boxing and martial arts) at T-Fit Training Centre each week.
I am a little nervous about the run this weekend because of my new training program that I just completed. I do not mean to but I put high expectations on myself to run a certain speed which I think is what happens to runners that run races as they get older. It’s not like I am running the race this weekend to beat anyone. My goal is to run a certain speed and that is what makes me nervous. I am nervous I will not be able to run as fast as I want to run. I find this funny but I also know that this is why I still run races. I like that I am challenging myself and giving myself this feeling of nervousness. Wish me luck!!
